Murano Glass Making Techniques

When we think of Murano glass all over the world think of something different, from the magnificent chandeliers from Murano Italy grace better than homes, restaurants and hotels with the paperweight colorful and well designed that it looks as if a flower has been preserved in the glass.

Just how these master craftsmen and women to achieve such an incredible variety of finishes? The answer lies in the specialist glass-making techniques developed over hundreds of years on the Venetian island of Murano. Here are some of the ways in which we finished glass products are produced, each providing production technique a "type" of Murano glass .

Lampworking

The basis for the manufacture of glass Murano, this involves heating the silica at extremely high temperatures, making it a molten liquid state. Then allowed to cool slowly, adding agents melting (flow) to help slow the process of solidification, while in this state is soft and works from the artist. The pieces are made with transparent glass rods fused around a core of white opaque or colored, which is formed by the stained glass and blown glass. These can be created in different patterns of which one is reticello, when the threads are woven together to form a diamond in a grid, with small bubbles of air into the formation of glass fibers. Another pattern is a retorti retortoli or warp threads in a spiral. single filament bar called Mezza Watermark.

Murrine Glass

Another well-known glass manufacturing technique, and the basis of non- less known 'Millefiore "(thousand flowers) glass, Murrine glass originated in Egypt between the third and first century BC and was developed by the Romans, before be revived in 1800.

thin rods of glass in different colors are placed around each other to form a pattern, usually a geometric design or floral (Much like a stick of Brighton Rock) and then merged, retaining its place in the pattern. The bars are stretched and pulled and thin sections cut ready to placed on the surface to decorate. Placed together in the object then encased in tinted or clear the end result is one of the techniques most commonly seen in paperweights, glasses and utensils gift.

Glass Vventurina

It is used for vases, paperweights and other glass objects containing micro particles Vventurina copper or other metals, giving it a golden appearance. The copper particles can be naturally brilliant, or may be colored, for example, red or dark blue. The name comes Ventura (Italian risk) as blowing glass is very difficult and work with these materials is considered an adventure!

Cold work (incisions, battuto, Velate)

When the cold glass surface has been finished using a grinding wheel. The wheel is used in different ways, at different depths and give results very different.

Incisions (ie, incision) in the grinding wheel is used to mark a fine line in the glass.

Battuto (meaning equal) is similar to the incisions, but with 7 cuts deeper often used to create larger fish ladders.

Velate is where the glass is slightly larger soil areas (or cut whole piece) for a glass surface, like satin.

Submerged

Hidden meaning (or sunk) glass sunk first occurred in late 1930, and is mainly used in vases and sculptures. Glass sheets are formed by being dipped repeatedly in various glass jars cast in different colors, with a clear outer surface and multiple layers of color underneath. This remains one of the most popular techniques for making parts contemporary Murano glass, in particular.

Incalmo

An ancient technique, it requires great skill of the artist who performs it. An object (Often a sculpture, or a Venetian glass) is formed by using different pieces of glass that have been made separately and then joined together by heating the glass and training get a piece. Work accurately and quickly enough to ensure the components fit together seamlessly is difficult, and is usuially carried out by 'Masters' glass.

Crystal Gold

Used at the upper end of Murano lamps to provide gold (gold) accents, the pieces are made with a small piece of sheet gold and is applied on the outside of the glass, or buried inside the glass glass.Iridato
